Reiki – Rei (rays of the sacred) Ki (life force energy)

Just as Yoga, Qigong and Tai Chi are ancient mind/body/energy healing modalities which work with the development of the “Ki” (life force energy), so is Reiki.  Reiki differs though in that it is not a physically active practice of energy work but rather a non-invasive hands-on approach which invokes a gentle, relaxing and welcoming energy into the energy fields of the recipient, thus making it available and relevant for animals.  Reiki can also be offered as “Distance Reiki” since there are no boundaries to this energy.

The “Ki” has been referred to as God, Holy Spirit, Universal Life Force, Prana, Great Spirit, Divine Light and the Tao.  While Reiki is not a religion, the energies are highly compatible with all religious and spiritual beliefs.   Kochi Tohei, author of “The Book of Ki”, defines the Ki as the basic unit of the universe. He further describes it as the “infinite gathering of infinitely small particles of which everything is ultimately composed of”

The role of the Reiki Practitioner is to serve as a bridge, offering the energy to the recipient as a way of bringing balance of mind, body, emotions and spirit.  As the energy flows through the animal they will experience a gentle state of relaxation as their energy fields are cleared and activated.  In turn, their own innate self-healing abilities become energized and go to work.  The connection between the Practitioner and the Animal is vitally important, and, with a clearly stated intention before each session the energy will go where it is most needed in order to activate their own self-healing.

Reiki can do no harm.  Rather just the opposite.  Positive balancing energy is what Reiki brings to the recipient.  Many hospitals, doctors and veterinary clinics are now integrating Reiki Practitioners into their practice as a complementary adjunct to traditional healing for many dis-eases.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF REIKI

Modern Reiki comes to us from Japan.  While there is no clear knowledge of who is responsible for what we know as Reiki, the prevailing information points to Mikao Usui. In the late 1800’s Dr. Mikao Usui committed over 10 years of his life to the study and understanding of the healing arts of the ancients – most of which had been lost, hidden, or passed on orally.  His search finally led him to the discovery of the root systems of these healing arts and from there he was able to successfully learn them, apply them, and then teach them.  Reiki Practice rapidly spread across Japan with 1200 clinics and thousands of Practitioners.  From Japan, Reiki spread to Hawaii and then to the mainland and across the Western World where it is now considered to be a powerful alternative and complimentary approach for healing and well-being.

“Every part of the system of Reiki is ultimately about meditation and
compassion as keys to healing.”
